MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will limit free Gemini users to the Flash-Lite model starting October 9, 2026. This change affects Gemini Apps used with personal Google accounts, and users without a Google AI subscription will lose access to Flash and Pro once the new rules are in place. Google states that this update is part of broader changes to model availability across its consumer AI strategies. The company announced the new access structure in its Gemini Apps support documentation.

Subscribers to Google AI Plus will continue to have access to Flash-Lite and Flash, but Pro will no longer be available to them. The company has not specified a single public transition date for all AI Plus users. Instead, affected users should expect an email from Google detailing when these revised access rules will be implemented for their accounts. Subscribers of AI Pro and AI Ultra will still be able to use Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro. The timeline for Plus accounts will depend on the notification sent by Google.
Google characterizes Flash-Lite as an efficient model designed for quick responses and routine tasks such as summarization and brainstorming. Flash offers enhanced capabilities while maintaining a balance between speed and reasoning for both simple and complex requests. Pro remains Google’s most advanced Gemini option, suitable for demanding activities including complex mathematics and coding. Additionally, Google notes that Pro offers a deeper understanding of text, files, images, and videos. Response times for Pro might also be longer compared to other Gemini models.
Paid subscription tiers maintain wider Gemini access
Customers with access to a model will also be able to select low, medium, or high effort levels. Google explains that higher effort settings can improve task completion and generate more comprehensive answers. These options also use more of a user’s available usage quota. Subscribers to AI Pro and AI Ultra will additionally get access to Deep Think, a feature optimized for maximum parallel reasoning on complex tasks. This feature is exclusive to the two higher-tier subscriptions.
The October restrictions follow earlier modifications to Gemini usage limits introduced on May 17, 2026. Google transitioned Gemini Apps to compute-based limits that reset every five hours until a weekly quota is exhausted. Usage is calculated based on prompt complexity, features utilized, and conversation length. Paid subscribers benefit from higher limits, though premium models and features tend to consume these limits more rapidly. These earlier changes were applied to users under 18 on July 24.
Subscription levels influence Gemini usage allowances
Standard usage limits are currently assigned to users without a Google AI plan. AI Plus provides double the standard allowance, while AI Pro increases it to four times the original limit. AI Ultra offers either five times or twenty times the AI Pro limit, depending on the specific subscription. Features such as media generation, Deep Research, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think are known to consume larger parts of these limits. Google states that paid users are granted higher quotas than free users.
The upcoming October changes specifically target Gemini Apps used with personal Google accounts. Separate arrangements are maintained for those accessing services through work or school accounts. Users can manage, upgrade, modify, or cancel Google AI plans via Gemini Apps and Google One. After the update, free personal accounts will be limited to Flash-Lite instead of access to Flash and Pro. The company also recommends keeping the Gemini mobile app updated as the new rules come into effect.
