SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is preparing to develop humanoid robots, expanding its artificial intelligence efforts beyond digital screens into physical embodiment. CEO Sam Altman announced this initiative on Fortune’s Sources podcast, mentioning to host Alyson Shontell that the company plans to produce such robots. Altman indicated that an engaging prototype demonstration could be ready by 2027. Widespread deployment in public environments remains several years away, as the company has yet to reveal the final design or specific applications for the robot.

Altman emphasized that the most challenging aspect is not the robot’s physical form but its processing capabilities. The AI needs to interpret real-world data, make decisions, and execute tasks accurately. He added that the robot’s shape is less critical than the system controlling it, noting that human-like designs are effective because doors, keyboards, and other equipment are tailored for humans. Altman also confirmed that OpenAI will develop humanoid models alongside other form factors.
To facilitate interaction with environments, OpenAI is recruiting specialists in AI systems and motion control. BigGo Finance identified 27 open positions on the company’s careers page related to robotics. These roles include state estimation, actuator management, comprehensive body behavior, and infrastructure for embodied AI machine learning. The listings also detail work on designing mechatronic actuators that integrate motors, transmissions, sensors, and thermal systems. Additional openings cover manufacturing processes and supply chain logistics for scaled production.
From construction sites to personal assistants
The overarching goal is to create versatile robots capable of performing a wide variety of tasks. One position suggests an initial focus on assisting skilled workers in building infrastructure. Over the longer term, OpenAI envisions personal robots that can support individuals at home and in daily routines. Altman stated that everyone should have a personal robot, though production capacity must be prioritized first. These robots will need to understand their surroundings and respond efficiently and safely to unexpected events.
Robotics marks a revival for OpenAI, which explored this area years ago. In 2019, its researchers trained a robotic hand to solve a Rubik’s Cube. The team was later disbanded as the company shifted focus to language models. Its startup investments have supported humanoid makers like 1X and Figure AI. However, Figure AI ended its partnership with OpenAI in February 2025. The organization has also established a formal process for reporting AI misalignment issues as its systems become more capable.
Global race accelerates to develop physical AI solutions
OpenAI joins an expanding roster of companies working on humanoid robots. Tesla is developing its Optimus robot, and Figure AI has launched Figure 03. Chinese automaker XPeng has started manufacturing its IRON humanoid. Companies like Samsung and BYD are also pursuing similar projects, reported Ubergizmo. Nvidia has expanded its physical AI initiatives with robotics collaborators worldwide. Altman’s remarks imply that OpenAI intends to compete primarily by advancing the intelligence layer that controls the hardware.
Details regarding the 2027 demo remain undisclosed, including pricing, launch timelines, and the robot’s appearance. Initial versions are expected to focus on industrial infrastructure and construction tasks, according to Ubergizmo. Altman highlighted that developing manufacturing capacity and infrastructure is a priority before releasing personal robots for consumers. The company continues to hire within its robotics division, and widespread use in homes and public spaces is projected to take several more years.
